Abstract

Earlier Lupemban assemblages from brecciated fissure sediments on Twin Rivers Kopje are of great interest in view of the appreciably greater antiquity recently suggested for the earlier Middle Stone Age. The Twin Rivers assemblages are compared with those from Kalambo Falls, the Congo Basin, and Zimbabwe. The assemblages combine components from both the forested grasslands of Equatoria and the savanna woodlands of east and south-central Africa. Faunal remains suggest that the early Middle Stone Age sequence reflects several episodes of climatic change between > 130,000 years BP and <95,000 years BP. © 2001 Academic Press.
