Abstract

Emanating from Thomas Mann's famous scene from the novel Buddenbrooks, in which Hanno, the last descendant of his family, draws a final stroke under the family record, perspectives on the formation of masculinity in family settings within contemporary literature will be developed. Familial masculinity will be examined in an extensive context, reaching beyond the often-discussed aspect of father-son-relationships in literature. On the one hand the intergenerational context of family novels (Arno Geiger, John von Düffel) will be incorporated, which i.a. leads to a stronger emphasis on the role of maritial relationships. On the other hand, texts by male authors (Peter Handke, Hanns-Josef Ortheil), whose fatherhood provokes an intensive process of poetological reflection, will also be discussed. Here, the experience of fatherhood leads to a reconsideration of their former attitude to literary production and authorship - which inaugurates new spaces (both temporal and physical) for and forms of writing, as well as an altered masculine self-perception.
