Abstract

The FP7 Collaborative Project FIRST-Nuclides (Fast / Instant Release of Safety Relevant Radionuclides from Spent Nuclear Fuel) aims to provide new and comprehensive knowledge of the fast release of safety relevant radionuclides from light water reactors (L WR) spent nuclear fuel (SNF) after failure of canisters in an underground repository. Key input data to safety analysis are "instant release fraction (IRF)" values of iodine, chlorine, carbon and selenium that are still largely unknown. These elements tend to form anionic species which are hardly chemically retained in the repository barrier system. The results are obtained by experimental investigations of high burn-up UO SNF from pressurized water reactors (PWR) and boiling water reactors (BWR) combined with modelling studies.
