Abstract

Several pollen analysis, dating from about 20 000 BP concern the period coming immediately after the coldest Wurmian maximum. The most complete sequence comes from Abri Fritsch (a rock shelter in SW France). If the two warm phases appear to be very similar when considering the percentages of the trees, they differ in the composition of the herbaceous layer. During the 'Interstade de Laugerie', the vegetation has a steppe character. In contrast, during the 'Interstade de Lascaux', the Gramineae are dominant, and wetness is indicated by the rise of ferns, and Salix, Alnus, Tilia. -from English summary
