Abstract

Tonsillectomy and tonsillotomy are frequently performed surgical operations among children. The main indication for tonsillectomy is a recurrent infection of thetonsills. The main indication for tonsillotomy is tonsillar hyperplasia often associated with a sleep related breathing disorder. The efficiency of both treatments has been demonstrated in several clinical trials. The most important complication is the post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage with rates up to 10% whereas the risk is much lower after tonsillotomy. In case of post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage children are especially at risk to suffer from lethal complications. Even with minor, spontaneously stopping hemorrhages an observation in an in-patients setting of an ENT-department is strongly recommended, as minor bleedings are often a precursor for severe hemorrhages.
