Research Interest
programme aims to study the form, transport and fate of radioactive isotopes in the environment. We are involved in several large national and international projects that aim to study the fate of radionuclides in the environment, including the E.U. Recosy project and the recently announced NERC consortium project, BIGRAD. Some of the topics that we are studying include: the development of novel analytical techniques for the determination of ultra-trace (< 1000 atoms) radioisotope concentrations, such as 236U by AMS; the fate of anthropogenic elements in discharges from Sellafield; the development of transport models to predict the migration of radionuclides in the geosphere; the interaction of radionuclides with mineral surfaces and natural colloids; the interactions of radionuclides with microbial communities.
